GUIDELINES FOR OBTAINING GEMS LOANER KITS

If you plan to request the use of GEMS materials, please thoroughly read the following information concerning the program. Adherence to these guidelines will enable the Center for Science and Environmental Education (CSEE) to better serve teachers in the Mississippi Delta. It will also insure that you receive the GEMS loaner kits in a timely fashion.

  1. Each GEMS loaner kit is usually provided to a teacher for a two-week loan period. The GEMS Loaner Kit Reservation Form requests that you supply us with the beginning and ending dates of kit use with your students. Once you begin the GEMS unit, if more time is needed to complete your unit of instruction please contact the CSEE by phone or by e-mail to request a loan period extension. The request for an extension will be granted if that particular kit has not already been scheduled for use by another teacher during the dates covered by the extension request.

  2. To request a GEMS loaner kit please complete the GEMS Loaner Kit Reservation Form and mail or fax it to the CSEE at least two weeks prior to the earliest date that you plan to use the kit. This will insure that there is sufficient shipping time for the kit to arrive at your school. Remember that you are only eligible to borrow those GEMS kits for which you have received training through a CSEE-sponsored GEMS workshop.
  3. The GEMS loaner kit that you receive will contain all the materials needed to teach that particular GEMS unit to your students. To keep expenses as low as possible, we usually do not provide items that are already present in most classrooms. These items include scissors, glue, crayons, etc.
  4. The GEMS loaner kit that you receive will contain an inventory list indicating those items packed by the CSEE staff. Please check the inventory list before you begin the unit and report any missing items to the CSEE by phone or by e-mail. Any missing items will be sent to you as soon as possible.
  5. After completion of the unit, return all non-consumable materials and any unused consumable materials to the loaner kit box. A checklist of all materials that should be returned to the CSEE will be enclosed in the kit box. Please use the checklist to insure that the proper materials are returned.
  6. Any damaged non-consumable items must be reported to the CSEE either by phone or by e-mail. A replacement fee may be charged based on the value of the item damaged and the condition of the item before it was shipped to your school.
  7. After the materials are placed in the loaner kit box for return, contact the CSEE by phone or by e-mail to arrange for a pick-up date and time. On the date that the GEMS kit is to be picked up please leave it in the school office so that a representative from CSEE can have easy access to it.
