As a teacher located in our 19-county service area, you may reserve science materials to assist in the implementation of guided and open inquiry strategies in your science classroom. The four lending programs that are currently operational are described below.

Activities Integrating Mathematics & Science or AIMS began in 1981 as a project funded by the National Science Foundation at Fresno Pacific College. Eighty classroom teachers and the faculty explored the effectiveness of integrating mathematics and science in grades 5-8. Even though long recommended by thoughtful educators, very few meaningfully integrated materials existed at the time. The initial AIMS materials produced such positive results that a major curriculum research and development effort was launched to fill this void.

Great Explorations in Math and Science or GEMS is a program of the Lawrence Hall of Science, based at the public science education center at the University of California at Berkeley. A national network of GEMS Centers and Network Sites have been established throughout the United States. In June, 2001 the CSEE became a national network site for the GEMS program. To date, CSEE has conducted many GEMS orientation workshops for Delta-area teachers impacting approximately hundreds of individuals. Teachers using GEMS materials in their classrooms receive materials support from the CSEE. To date, several thousand students have benefited from use of these materials. This program along with the following programs help us to provide professional development to teachers and communities located within our 19-county service area.
